Does Texas still require a vehicle safety inspection?

No. As of January 1, 2025, under House Bill 3297, Texas eliminated mandatory annual safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles. You no longer need a safety inspection to register a passenger car or truck, though you now pay a $7.50 Inspection Program Replacement Fee at registration. Commercial vehicles still require a safety inspection statewide.

Do I still need an emissions test in Houston?

Yes. Even though safety inspections were eliminated, emissions testing is still required in 17 Texas counties, including Harris County and the greater Houston area of Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, and Montgomery counties. Electric-only vehicles remain exempt from emissions testing.

How often should I inspect my car if the state no longer requires it?

A good rule of thumb is a thorough inspection about once a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, following your owner's manual. Older or high-mileage vehicles benefit from more frequent checks, roughly every six months, focused on brakes, tires, suspension, and steering.

Can poor vehicle maintenance affect a car accident claim?

Yes. If a poorly maintained vehicle, such as one with worn brakes or bald tires, contributes to a crash, that neglect can affect liability. Keeping maintenance records and addressing mechanical issues promptly protects both your safety and your legal position after an accident.
